Photographer Pavel Tereshkovetswas was born in Belarus
The photographer, who often tries to visualize the feeling of loneliness throughout his work, didn't expressly seek to take photos for his American Prayer series

Instead, he simply took photographs of what interested him, and found a unifying theme once he returned back home and looked through his images

He was born into a family addicted to traveling, and visited countries throughout Europe, the former Soviet Union, North Africa and the Middle East at an early age

But when he landed in the US, he found famous landmarks like the Hollywood sign and the Seattle Space Needle disappointing compared to images he had previously seen on the silver screen

He explained that to most people outside of the country, America had become a myth characterized by happiness, wealth and success

Tereshkovets shot the series in medium format film, which he said slowed down the process and made him think

He added: 'The project is about eternity, not about moments,' explaining why most of his pictures lacked the presence of people

Contrary to the glamour of films, he found America to be 'vast and giant, strange and weird, forgotten and lonely'
