The first of the Butchart Gardens, the sunken garden, was established from the remains of a limestone quarry by Jennie Butchart

The collection later expanded to include a Japanese (pictured), Italian, Mediterranean and rose garden thanks to its micro-climates
Established in the 16th century, the Villa d'Este garden is filled with references to the Renaissance period and is said to have set the trend for European garden styles. Above, the oval fountain

Its most attractive feature is perhaps the impressive collection of fountains, including one which plays a hydraulic organ. Above, the 'Hundred Fountains'
Peterhof is often described as the Versailles of Russia and is composed of several palaces, gardens and parks that's been built up over several years

The Dubai Miracle Garden is one of the biggest gardens in the world with around 100million species growing in 7.2 hectares

Unlike many other gardens around the world, the plants in Dubai Miracle Garden have been cultivated on trellises to create different shapes like the houses above

Originally a fruit orchard, Nong Nooch was transformed into a botanical garden in 1980. It features numerous small gardens that take their inspiration from different parts of the world

One of the most iconic gardens is the French garden (pictured), which was inspired by the gardens at Versailles. You will also find inspirations from other parts of Europe in the Italian and European gardens

The Kirstenbosch gardens lies on the site of a former farm just outside of Cape Town near Table Mountain. When it was established in 1913, the land had already been neglected for almost a decade so there was a lot of work involved in getting it into shape

Since then, it's been transformed in a botanical garden with landscaped lawns and sculpted flowerbeds that's wheelchair accessible. Above, the elevated walkway

The tulip gardens at Keukenhof are only open during the spring but it's often considered one of the most beautiful gardens in the world

In the short time that the park is open, you will see some seven million flowers in bloom, with around 800 different varieties to spot 

The gardens at Versailles have inspired many gardens around the world, including many that are featured here. Above, the Orangerie and the Piece d' Eau des Suisses

It was commissioned in 1661 by Louis XIV to rival the designs of the palace itself and took some forty years to complete. Above, the iconic Latona Fountain

Saihō-ji is said to have been established as a temple some time between 710 to 794AD but the site had previously been a residence of Prince Shotoku, who lived there between 574 and 622AD

The best time to visit is from mid-June to mid-July when the moss is at its densest or in autumn when the leaves of the maple trees turn red and orange

There's around 50,000 plants, spread over 140 acres, inside the Desert Botanical Garden in Arizona, which is one of the biggest desert gardens in the world

The grounds have been created to educate visitors and allow research and conservation of the different species. You'll be able to see many cacti species in the garden

Singapore's Garden by the Bay is designed to capture what life is like in the country by creating a 'city in a garden'

The garden almost resembles a theme park with various sky walks and themed conservatories but the entire space is meticulously planned to be sustainable. Above, the gardens at night

The enormous Summer Palace has had a long and complicated history having housed emperors and key figures in China's communist party in its time

Aside from the hills and lakes, people also visit the palace to see the traditional architecture that's found all over the garden. Above, Kunming Lake with some palace buildings in the background 

Brazil is one of the most bio-diverse places in the world so you can expect to see plenty of unusual plants at the Jardim Botânico. Above, avenue of royal palm trees

Majority of the plants featured at Jardim Botanico can also be found elsewhere in the world as the use of the garden has varied between conservation to scientific research
