SICHUAN, CHINA: IS THIS the most densely packed student village in the world? Dizzying images of thousands of log cabins piled high along hillsides and down valley are actually student accommodation. Stretching far and wide these incredible pictures show the red orange and green decorated make shift homes of local monks and nuns tightly packed together surrounding the main university for the study of Tibetan Buddhism. Other pictures show the traditional sky burial, whereby the deceased is place inside a vessel and left for vultures to consume. Photographer Jesse Earl Rockwell (32) from Santa Barbara, California spent six days on location at Larung Gar Buddhist Institute, Gharze Prefecture, Sichuan China to photograph this incredible sprawling hillside habitation.

Sparkling: Just after dark, the incredible student village at the Larung Gar Buddhist Institute in Sichuan is completely lit up by light

High up: The enormous Larung Gar Buddhist Institute is situated about 13,000ft above sea level in the remote Gharze Prefecture

Busy: Each year, thousands of monks and nuns come to the institute to study Tibetan Buddhism and stay in the cabins pictured

One of the pilgrimage sites

Devout: It's not just the monks and nuns who flock to the institute. Devout follows also come for pilgrimages to the site

Rudimentary: As this close up of the log cabin shows, the homes are very rudimentary. However, they've all been painted Tibetan red

Decorated: As well as the traditional red, majority of the huts have also been painted with other colours and patterns (pictured)

Project: Jesse Earl Rockwell spent six days at Larung Gar Buddhist Institute to capture images such as this one of the smiling monks

Study: Above, a close up of the institute itself, with a roof painted in gold. All of the cabins surround the institute building

Enormous: The school is the largest of its kind in the world and where many devout followers flock to learn about the religion

Colour-coded: All of the buildings are Tibetan red but the main religious structures have their roof painted in gold, as pictured

Historical: The institute was founded in 1980 by Khenpo Jigme Phuntsok and the cabin homes have sprawled out from there

Education: Khenpo is the title given to scholars who have excelled in their studies of the religion and are highly revered

Tourist site: Although the school was founded in remote mountains, it has, in recent years, become an increasingly popular tourist site

Unusual: Larung Gar Buddhist Institute is one of the few places in the world where both men and women can study Buddhism

Separate: Although there are monks and nuns studying in close proximity, they live separately from each other in designated areas

Cold: The high altitude of the area means that the mountains nearby are covered in frost and snow for much of the year

Way of life: As well as their homes, the photographer has managed to capture some of their unusual traditions. Above, monks take a selfie surrounded by prayer flags

Traditions: Above, the vultures used for sky burial where the deceased is place inside a vessel and left for vultures to consume
